I walked down the broken road of cement, crumbling building rising around me like walls. Above me, the sun was just starting to set, casting the sky a bright crimson. Pinks clouds dotted the sky, and a glow was fading from the west. The road in front of me was one of craters and cracks, stretching off into the infinite horizon, like it could have gone on forever. Besides from my footsteps pattering against the road, there wasn't a single sound to be heard. No singing crickets. No disturbed birds. Joleb crouched under a tree in the darkness. The wind brushed aside is short raven black bangs across his eyes, slightly annoying him. Finally the patrol of guards passed him, their burning torches slightly illuminating the foliage Joleb was hidden in. They hadn't even bothered to check the bushes. Joleb shook his head in confusion. Joleb hit the ground, rolling into a crouch, dirt flying up behind him. Shouts were coming from the house behind him, lights flickering on like it was under attack, the shafts of luminosity piercing the black night. Joleb grinned. Not an attack of course, he thought with pleasure just a robbery. He tightened his grip on the leather purse clutched in his hand, feeling the tightly stitched material. Alera parried the sword easily as if she were flicking a bug off of her shoulder. The swordsman stumbled and in the brief opening of which she had, Alera thrusted the butt of her sword into his helmet. He wobbled, not at all unlike a top before it's about to fall, and crumpled into a dazed heap. The second swordsman didn't look too eager to charge, but he took a few tentative steps toward her. “Look kid,” Alera said, brushing her long bright red braids over her shoulder, “if you charge, I'll dodge your followings strike, thrust the butt of my sword into your ribs, probably breaking a few,  and then finish you the same way a

 Henting rested his sword point first on the barren ground. Around him hung the unmistakable stench of death, but there wasn't much to signified it, besides the aura that Henting felt so deeply around him. The other soldiers had made a clean job of gathering the bodies and burning them, and  there was hardly any signs of the newly passed battle. Another day, another battle, thought Henting sourly. After awhile, the countless combats had begun to blend together, a fact that made Henting slightly depressed.
